Blue Demons Roll Past Northern Illinois

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Five players in double-figures led DePaul to a second straight convincing win in a 78-67 decision over Northern Illinois. The Blue Demons held a double-figure lead throughout the second half and utilized strong defensive pressure to force 21 turnovers by the Huskies.
A 13-0 run opened up a 30-19 lead midway through the first half. Billy Garrett Jr.'s six points fueled the outburst that lasted less than two minutes.
Forrest Robinson buried a deep three-pointer to beat the first-half buzzer and the Blue Demons took a 38-29 advantage into intermission.
DePaul (4-1) continued the pressure on Northern Illinois opened up a 16-point lead with a 9-0 run to start the second half. A Jamee Crockett layup with 16:56 left made the score 47-31 in favor of the Blue Demons.
The Blue Demon lead increased to as high as 19 points before Northern Illinois (3-2) came back with an 11-1 run. A three-pointer by Michael Orris pulled Northern Illinois to within nine with just under 7 minutes left in the game forcing a DePaul time out.
Coming out of the break, Garrett fouled was fouled and converted two free throws on back-to-back possessions and the Blue Demons held a double-figure lead over the remainder of the evening.
Crockett was named the winner of the Jay Goedert Memorial Award as the game's MVP. The senior totaled 13 points with four steals while going 5-for-7 from the field.
Myke Henry led the Blue Demons with 15 points as five players reached double-figures. Garrett added 15 and Robinson totaled 14. Tommy Hamilton IV added a solid game with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots and Durrell McDonald totaled nine assists, five steals, five points and four rebounds.
Northern Illinois was led by 16 points from Aaric Armstead.
DePaul faces a quick turnaround and a short trip to Chicago State on Thursday night. Start time at the Jones Convocation Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can heard on WSCR 670 AM and also seen online on the WAC Digital Network.
