MIAMI, Fla. - Junior catcher Staci Bonezek went 2-for-2 at the plate, but the DePaul softball team was shut out by hosting Florida International in its second consecutive five-inning loss, 8-0, on Saturday at FIU Softball Stadium.
The Blue Demons (1-2) have been held scoreless over their past 10 innings, and were limited to just four base runners against a hot FIU squad - the Panthers improved to 3-0 at their own tournament and have scored 27 runs in those wins.
Bonezek had half of the Blue Demons' offensive output, singling in the second and fifth innings. Freshman Dylan Christensen and sophomore Gena Lenti also added base hits. Junior Mary Connolly (0-1) made the start and gave up five earned runs in 4.2 innings with one strikeout.
FIU's sophomore starter Corinne Jenkins (2-0) gave up two hits in the second and fifth, but was able to wiggle out of jams in both innings. Meanwhile, the Panthers built a 6-0 lead heading into the home half of the fifth. A two-out double by freshman Stephanie Texeira sealed the game for FIU.
DePaul gets back to action later this afternoon in a rematch against Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons were shut out 12-0 in the second half of yesterday's season-opening doubleheader and will be looking to avoid a third-straight loss for the first time since March 15-16, 2013.
Notes: DePaul has been held scoreless over its past 10 innings of play… FIU evened the all-time series between the two schools at 2-2… Bonezek recorded her second multi-hit game of the weekend and is now 4-for-6 in her first three games… Gena Lenti's hit was her first of the season… Mary Connolly made her first start since May 4, 2013 at Connecticut… the last time DePaul softball was shut out in back-to-back games was May 19, 2012 at the NCAA Championships...
