Blue Demons pick up 5-1 victory in series finale
CHICAGO – DePaul softball picked up a convincing 5-1 victory over St. John's to close out the weekend series Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons received timely contributions throughout the lineup, as eight different batters notched at least one hit, while the pitching staff limited St. John's to just one run, its fewest in a BIG EAST game this season.
Offensively, senior third baseman Bibianna Rodriguez led the way with a 3-for-3 outing at the plate while driving in a run. Sophomore outfielder Jolie Adams shined once again, extending her hit streak to six games with two singles and a run scored. Junior designated player Lydia Ettema set the tone early, splitting the left-center gap for a two-RBI double in the first inning to give DePaul a lead it would not relinquish.
For the second straight game, senior right-hander Kelly Greene was tabbed as the starter, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Hannah Messer entered in relief and recorded the final two outs of the fifth, allowing one hit. Right-hander Bella Nigey closed out the contest, throwing two innings and surrendering just two hits to pick up her second save of the season.
How It Happened
The Red Storm struck early, using a one-out triple in the top of the first before scoring on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. DePaul responded in the bottom half of the inning, as a base hit from Adams and a hit-by-pitch to Chelsea Parker put two aboard. Ettema delivered with a double to left center, driving in both runners and giving DePaul a 2-1 lead.
Carrying the momentum into the second frame, DePaul used a pair of singles to open the inning, followed by a St. John's fielding error, to put runners in scoring position. Senior infielder Alexis Houge then laced a base hit through the right side, scoring another run to extend the DePaul lead to 3-1.
St. John's (25-13, 6-6 BIG EAST) threatened in the top of the fifth, as a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs. However, the Blue Demons induced a flyout to right field to end the inning and preserve the 3-1 advantage.
DePaul (13-24, 4-11 BIG EAST) added insurance in the bottom of the sixth, as three consecutive base hits loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Zoe Levine delivered in a pinch-hit opportunity, lining a two-RBI single to right field to extend the lead to 5-1, an advantage the Red Storm would not overcome.
