Verdun's Gem Leads DePaul Past Jacksonville, 5-0

MIAMI, Fla. - Kirsten Verdun pitched a gem, striking out 12 and allowing just three hits on Saturday and helping DePaul softball to a 5-0 win over Jacksonville on day two at the Felsberg Memorial.
The Blue Demons (2-2) recovered from back-to-back shut outs and won for the second time this season with their senior ace on the mound. Jacksonville, which defeated DePaul 12-0 on Friday, fell to 2-2 after picking up a morning win over Maryland.
DePaul caps tournament play tomorrow in the tournament championship against hosting FIU. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. CT.
Junior Mary Connolly finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and a walk while eight other Blue Demons connected for at least one hit. Morgan Maize, Kali Gardner and Verdun all recorded an RBI.
Connolly scored on a Jacksonville error to open up the scoring in the top of the first and DePaul added an RBI single by Maize in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Verdun helped her own cause with an RBI double in the fifth and Ali Lenti scored on a JU wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game. In the home half of the fifth, Verdun lost her perfect game bid on a single by Emily Sanchez.
Jacksonville added two hits in the sixth, while DePaul added a run on an RBI double by Gardner in the seventh to seal the win.
Notes: DePaul ended a 10-inning scoreless streak with a run in the first inning... DePaul improved to 2-1 against JU in the all-time series... Verdun struck out her most batters since May 5, 2013 at Connecticut... Verdun completed her 25th career shut out and won her 74th career game... Connolly tied a career-high with three runs scored...
