Volleyball Swept by IUPUI in Evansville Invitational Opener

Junior Saige Gallop led the attack for the sixth time this season and was the only Blue Demon to reach double figures with 11 kills. Gallop also added eight digs and two aces in the match.
Fellow junior Colleen Smith dished out a team-high 30 assists, setting up six different teammates for kills. Smith totaled seven digs and four blocks, including a solo rejection.
DePaul controlled the net defensively as five Blue Demons registered at least two blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Randi Leath matched a career-high with seven block assists against the Jaguars.
First-year standout Caitlyn Coffey led the team with a .385 attack percentage, notching seven kills in the three-set match. Coffey also chipped in with three block assists.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle as the lead changed 10 times throughout the frame. IUPUI raced out to a 5-2 lead before DePaul clawed back into it with a 4-1 run to tie the set, 6-6. The two teams went point-for-point before a pair of attacking errors by the Blue Demons put the Jaguars up, 20-18. IUPUI went on to win the set, 25-21.
A pair of blocks from JaQuayla Baker and Coffey gave DePaul a 7-4 lead to begin the second stanza. Three straight attacking errors from IUPUI and an ace from Gallop gave the Blue Demons a six-point lead at 12-6 - their largest of the set. The Jaguars responded with a 9-1 run to gain control of the set, 15-13. Despite three kills from Gallop, IUPUI went on to win the set, 25-22.
The Jaguars used the momentum from winning the first two sets and opened the third frame with an 8-2 run. Another ace by Gallop got the Blue Demons within two at 18-16, however IUPUI strung together seven of the game's final eight points to win the set, 25-17.
Meredith Farkas turned in an all-around performance to lead the Jaguars, landing 10 kills and also posting three digs, two aces and a block assist. Setters Ashley Hacker and Alexis Mapes dished out 18 and 17 assists, respectively.
The Blue Demons are back in action tomorrow when they play Evansville at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the Evansville Invitational against Central Michigan at 4 p.m.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The DePaul volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) defeat to IUPUI on Friday evening at the Evansville Invitational. The Blue Demons fell to 2-5 on the season, while the Jaguars improved their record to 3-6 in 2014.
