
Blue Demons Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Eastern Illinois

Sophomore Randi Leath set career-highs in both kills (12) and attacks (32) to pace the DePaul attack. Freshmen Caitlyn Coffey and Myah Reed each added nine kills each in the Blue Demons' first five-set match of the year.
Junior setter Colleen Smith produced her fifth double-double of the season, dishing out 32 assists and posting 14 digs. Smith has all five of DePaul's double-doubles on the season.
Making her first start of the season, freshman Jasmine King set a career-high with six blocks and added four kills for the Blue Demons.
DePaul set a new season-best when it tallied 77 digs in the contest. The Blue Demons also were tough at the net, totalling a season-high 17 blocks as a team.
Chelsea Lee paced the Panthers with a blistering .407 attack percentage (28-6-54). Setter Marah Bradbury was an efficient passer, assiting on 56 kills for Eastern Illinois.
DePaul jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first frame, highlighted by five kills from Leath. Eastern Illinois responded with a 3-0 spurt before kills from Saige Gallop and Reed thwarted the Panther comeback. The Blue Demons used two attacking errors from Eastern Illinois to win the first set, 25-17.
The Panthers squashed any momentum DePaul had and raced out to a 10-7 lead to open the second set. A pair of blocks involving King and Reed brought the deficit down to one at the 10-9 mark. The set went back-and-forth until Eastern Illinois regained a two-point lead with the score at 21-19. The Panthers held off the Blue Demons and won the second set, 25-22. The frame saw 10 ties and seven lead changes throughout.
Eastern Illinois came out of the locker room on fire and took a 12-8 lead to begin the third stanza. Kills from six different Blue Demons ignited their own 12-8 run to tie the set at 20-20. Two blocks from Leath pushed DePaul to a 25-23 victory in the third set.
Down to their final set, the Panthers dominated the fourth frame. Eastern Illinois busted out to a 16-6 lead and never looked back. The Blue Demons brought the margin down to eight at the 20-12 mark behind an attacking error from the Panthers. Eastern Illinois closed out the set with a 5-3 run, 25-15.
