CHICAGO -- Following its most successful season in school history, the DePaul women's tennis team kicks off its 2014 fall season on Friday when five members of the squad participate in the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill., and Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu head west to Palisades, Calif., for the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Just five months ago, the Blue Demons locked down their first BIG EAST Tournament championship to secure the programs first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
In Evanston, Yuliya Shupenia will make her DePaul debut against Western Michigan's Caroline Aleck to get things started for the Blue Demons in the Purple Singles Flight. Also participating in that pool will be Jarret Fisher, who faces Lolade Ogungbesan (Pittsburgh), Jasmin Kling, who plays Katherine Castro (Pittsburgh), and newcomer Patricia Lancranjan, who will take on Eastern Michigan's Daphne Friedrichs.
In the Black Singles Flight, Rebeca Mitrea, who won 28 singles matches last year, will square off against Ann-Sophie Hahn (UIC) in the first round.
The Wildcat Invitational will begin Friday morning and last through Sunday.
Meanwhile, Fargas and Vladutu will take aim at the ITA All-Americans beginning Saturday in Palisades. Fargas will open things up in the prequalifying singles draw, while Vladutu begins her tournament later on (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) in the qualifying singles pool. Vladutu comes into the year ranked No. 80 nationally in singles.
On the doubles side, the dynamic duo of Fargas and Vladutu, who are ranked the nation's No. 44 doubles pair, will take aim at the main doubles draw from Oct. 2-5. It is the first time a DePaul pair was selected to the tournament's main doubles draw.
Full coverage of the tournaments will be provided at www.depaulbluedemons.com throughout the weekend.
