SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The DePaul women's tennis program was well-represented in the 2014-15 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason singles and doubles rankings released on Monday morning.
Junior Ana Vladutu was ranked No. 80 in the national singles poll, while Vladutu and senior Patricia Fargas were tabbed the No. 44 doubles duo in the country.
"It's really nice for our program to have players start off in the national rankings," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "The harder part is staying there and trying to get higher. I'm sure both girls will work hard to achieve that."
In addition, Vladutu and Fargas were selected to the main doubles draw of the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Sept. 26 - Oct. 5 in Los Angeles, Calif.
In singles play, Vladutu will begin in the Qualifying Singles bracket at the ITA All-Americans, while Fargas will start in the Prequalifying Singles region.
"Ana and Patricia being selected to the main draw in doubles is a major first for our program," Ardizzone said. "To be selected among the elite will be a great honor and great experience for both of them.
"The two singles selections in other parts of the draw makes a great representation for the program as well. I'm excited to see them challenge themselves."
Last year Fargas led the Blue Demons with a 26-14 overall record and 16-8 mark in dual play. She was ranked as high as No. 125 in the ITA rankings during the 2014 spring. Meanwhile Vladutu climbed to No. 92 in the singles polls last year and earned the BIG EAST's automatic individual berth into the 2014 NCAA Singles Tournament. She was the first Blue Demon women's tennis player to participate in the event.
The 2014 DePaul tennis team went 22-4 overall and won the program's first BIG EAST Tournament championship, defeating Xavier, 4-0, in the BIG EAST finals. The Blue Demons begin their 2014 fall season later this month.
