WASHINGTON, D.C. - The DePaul volleyball team tied the match versus Georgetown late, but failed to complete the comeback against the Hoyas Sunday afternoon, 3-2 (25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 16-25, 15-10). DePaul ends the four-match road stint with a 12-7 overall record (1-6 in BIG EAST), while Georgetown improves to 8-12 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST.
Caitlyn Coffey was two blocks away from a double-double on the day and finished with a team-high 12 kills and a match-high eight total blocks. Brittany Maxwell and Jasmine King both recorded double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
For the second match in a row, Tyler Graham produced 20-plus digs with 21 in the five sets. She added three service aces to her day.
Colleen Smith recorded 43 assists and seven digs for the Blue Demons.
Liv King registered a match-high 18 kills for the Hoyas, while Alyssa Sinnette had 17 kills.
The Blue Demons started the first set on a 4-0 run that featured kills by King and Maxwell. The Hoyas slowly tied the match at 8-8, tying the match on a DePaul attacking error. DePaul built its lead back to three points five times, but the Blue Demons could not keep the Hoyas away. Georgetown took over the lead, 20-19, after Ashlie Williams secured the go-ahead kill for the Hoyas. DePaul tied the match again at 20-all, but could not stop a 5-0 rally from the Hoyas to end the set, 25-20.
DePaul jumped to a 10-7 lead in the second frame to gain an early advantage. The teams battled point-for-point after being deadlocked at points 14 through 19. The Hoyas took a two-point lead when King set up Georgetown for set point. DePaul tied the set, 24-24, after Graham placed a serve where no Hoya could get to it. Unfortunately, the Blue Demon comeback fell short when the Hoyas scored back-to-back points to secure set two, 26-24.
Facing what could have been the final set, DePaul rode early set momentum to grab a 12-7 lead that was capped off by a Georgetown attack error. The Hoyas brought the match back within one, 12-11, with a 4-0 run and eventually tied the match at 14-14. Georgetown built a lead of three with a Paige McKnight service ace to make the score 22-19. Head coach Nadia Edwards called a timeout to regroup her squad. The short break helped the Blue Demons rally for six points in a row to win their first set of the day, 25-22.
In the fourth set, DePaul wasted no time in taking the lead at 15-7 with a 5-0 rally that featured three service aces from Haley Bueser. The closest Georgetown would get to the DePaul advantage was seven in the frame as the teams went back-and-forth in the tail end of the set. The Blue Demons closed the set with a kill by King and forced a service error on Georgetown to tie the match with a fourth set win of 25-16.
Georgetown came out in the fifth set with a 7-3 lead that was capped with a King kill. After a DePaul timeout, the Blue Demons brought the set within one point after a Hoya attack error. That would be as close as DePaul would come to the lead as Georgetown used a 3-0 rally and a match point kill by Lauren Saar to hand DePaul the road loss.
DePaul returns home after the four-match road slate for eight home matches in a row, starting with St. John's on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons host Providence the next day at 7 p.m. CT.
