CHICAGO - After battling No. 25 St. John's to a standstill on Sunday, DePaul's Sarah Gorden and Franny Cerny were honored by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday.
Gorden was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season while Cerny won the BIG EAST Freshman award for the fourth week in a row.
Gorden headed a back four including Elizabeth Endy, Brianna Ryce and Taylor Schissler that contained the high-powered Red Storm attack in the 1-1, double-overtime draw at Wish Field.
Gorden & Co. limited St. John's (12-2-1, 4-1-1) to just four shots on goal with the nation's second-leading scorer Rachel Daly scoring in the 61st minute.
No. 18 DePaul (11-2-3, 5-0-1) is the stingiest team in the BIG EAST, having given up just three goals in conference play.
Cerny, who is emerging as the favorite to win the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year award, scored her sixth goal of the season in the 26th minute to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
The rookie from Berkeley, Calif. is now second on the team in points with 17 (six goals, five assists) behind Elise Wyatt (11 goals, four assists, 26 points).
In the BIG EAST, Cerny is sixth in points per game, tied for sixth in goals, seventh in points and tied for seventh in assists.
"I'm excited to have an impact on the team in my first season," Cerny said after the St. John's game. "My teammates have made it easier for me to succeed as a freshman."
DePaul sits atop the BIG EAST standings with 16 points and has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship. St. John's and Georgetown are tied for second with 13 points.
The Blue Demons are back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday with a BIG EAST match at Providence that will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network.
