
Volleyball Falls in First Match of Weekend to Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. ââ'¬" The DePaul volleyball team opened its two-match weekend road trip with a loss to Seton Hall Friday night, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22). The Blue Demons drop to 12-4, 1-3 in the BIG EAST on the season, while the Pirates jump to 8-7, 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Colleen Smith finished the match with a double-double of 23 assists and 11 digs. Smith also added three kills, two service aces and two total blocks to her night.
Brittany Maxwell led the Blue Demons with seven kills and six total blocks. Callie Huebener and Caitlyn Coffey each had five kills.
Tyler Graham closed the night with 13 digs and two service aces. Coffey helped on four blocks and added a solo denial to her stat line.
Seton Hall was led by Cherise Hennigan on the attack with a match-high 16 kills on 38 total attempts.
Friday night's match started with a 7-7 tie between the Blue Demons and the Pirates. SHU broke the tie and built a lead by rallying for four straight points, three caused by DePaul errors. The Blue Demons battled and brought the match within three on multiple occasions, but could not cut into the Pirate lead enough to tie the match. Seton Hall closed the set on a 4-0 run and won the first set, 25-17.
The Blue Demons opened the second set with a 4-0 run that included two Graham service aces. Seton Hall tied the match at 8-8 after a DePaul attacking error. Back-and-forth play between the two sides forced a tie at 20-20. Maxwell and Coffey recorded back-to-back kills to tie the match, but Seton Hall went on a 5-1 rally to break away from the Blue Demons and eventually claim the second frame.
In the third set, the two sides saw 12 ties, most among the three sets, and four lead changes. With the match tied at six-all, SHU used a 5-0 run to gain an 11-6 lead. The Blue Demons did not go away with the match on the line and came back with a 6-1 rally of their own to tie it at 12-all. DePaul gained a late lead when Saige Gallop registered a kill to make the score 19-18. Three points in a row by Seton Hall gave the Pirates a 21-19 lead. After a timeout by DePaul, the Blue Demons mounted a comeback that capped with Smith tying the match after a service ace for the Blue Demons, 21-21. For the third-straight set, Seton Hall used a late rally to help clinch the set, 25-22, and win the match.
