CHICAGO - The DePaul volleyball team closed the weekend by suffering a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18) loss to Seton Hall Saturday night. After the match, the Blue Demons drop to 13-10 (2-9 BIG EAST) on the year, while Seton Hall improves to 11-12 (5-6 BIG EAST).
Colleen Smith finished the match with 33 assists, passing Christy Landschoot on the all-time career assist leader list for fifth. Smith added eight digs and four total blocks to her night.

The first set saw both teams go back-and-forth to a 13-13 tie. Seton Hall took the lead when Amanda Hansen put away a kill for the Pirates. DePaul answered Seton Hall`s rallies and stayed within three of the Pirates' lead for the rest of the set. A kill by Brittany Maxwell brought the Blue Demons within one of the deficit, 24-23, but a clutch point for Seton Hall secured the first set, 25-23.
A total of 12 ties found both teams even at 18-all midway through the second set. Back-to-back points by DePaul helped put the Blue Demons in the driver's seat to control the set. A timeout by Seton Hall could not stop DePaul's 4-0 run to end the set and tie the match.
It was a frame of runs in third set between the two sides. Seton Hall recorded rallies of 4-0 (twice) and 5-0, while DePaul enjoyed two rallies of 3-0 and four instances of back-to-back kills. After the Pirates grabbed a three-point lead late in the set, DePaul called a timeout and answered with a point to bring the deficit within two. Seton Hall ended the set on a 5-1 run to win the frame, 25-18.
In the fourth set, Seton Hall jumped to a 3-0 lead. DePaul battled on multiple occasions to bring the set back within one, but could not match the Pirates' score. Seton Hall produced a 7-1 run towards the end of the set to grab a 21-14 lead. DePaul scored three points in a row after the Pirate run to cut the Seton Hall lead to four. With the score set at 24-18, a DePaul attacking error gave Seton Hall the set and the match, 3-1.
DePaul returns to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Oct. 31 in its next BIG EAST match versus Marquette. The Saturday match is set for a 7 p.m. CT.
