CHICAGO - Jameson MacPhie paced the Blue Demon attack with 13 kills in Saturday night's BIG EAST match, but DePaul dropped the conference match to Marquette, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20). The Blue Demons end the weekend with a 13-11 (2-10 BIG EAST) record, while Marquette goes to 18-7 (9-3 BIG EAST).
MacPhie's 13 kills and 49 attacks were career highs for the outside hitter. Jasmine King finished second on the team for kills with nine on 15 attacks.
Colleen Smith ended the night with 33 assists and eight digs. Smith now sits in fourth all-time for DePaul career assists.
Callie Huebener and Lexi Chanos each recorded 10 digs for the Blue Demons Saturday night.
Taylor Louis was the top attacker for Marquette with 18 kills on 40 attacks.
The first set saw four ties between the two teams early in the match. With the match tied at eight-all, Marquette notched the next five points to grab the big lead. Brittany Maxwell secured a kill midway through the match to cut deficit to two, but the Golden Eagles rallied for four points to build the lead back to six, 19-13. Three kills by MacPhie late in the set left the score at 22-20. Three straight points by the Golden Eagles solidified the first set, 25-20.
Back-and-forth play in the second set found Marquette with a slight lead over DePaul midway through the frame, 15-14. King enjoyed a strong second set with four kills early in the frame. After Marquette took a five-point lead, 22-17, head coach Nadia Edwards called a timeout to slow the Marquette attack. The Golden Eagles ended the set on a 4-0 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
DePaul hopped to a 5-2 lead in the third set after a Smith service ace and forced a Marquette timeout. The stoppage did not slow down the Blue Demon attack as DePaul built its lead to six at 12-6. Marquette climbed its way back into set and tied it at 16-16 off a Louis kill and took the lead shortly after. Late in the frame, the Blue Demons cut the Marquette lead to three on a Huebener service ace. The comeback fell short as Sara Blasier notched the final point of the match with a service ace.
Three home matches are ahead for DePaul next week. The Blue Demons welcome UIC to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. CT non-conference showdown.
