Shupenia, Cozac Advance in Singles at the ITA Regional

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Junior Yuliya Shupenia and freshman Marina Cozac of the DePaul women's tennis team advanced to the singles main draw Round 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship after notching victories at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Ann Arbor, Mich. today.
Five Blue Demons competed in the main draw of singles competition, marking a 5-3 overall record.
No. 119 ranked singles player in the nation and No. 4 seed at the tournament, Shupenia, received a bye for the first round, but went on to defeat Rachel Chong from Notre Dame 6-2, 7-5. Tomorrow, Shupenia faces Mira Ruder-Hook from Michigan.
Cozac defeated Barbare Eristavi from Western Michigan 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and then went on to beat Allison Miller from Notre Dame 6-4, 6-4 in the second in order to face Maddie Lipp from Northwestern tomorrow.
Graduate senior Rebeca Mitrea and senior Zaina Sufi notched victories in round one, but both lost in the second round to their respective opponents.
Mitrea defeated Sophia Geier from Akron 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Quinn Gleason from Notre Dame 6-0, 6-4 while Sufi won against Tracy Kuhle from Western Michigan 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 before dropping her match to Lauren Chypyha from Wisconsin 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Patricia Lancranjan received a bye in the first round, but dropped her match against Ferny Angeles Paz from Ohio State 6-2, 6-2.
Doubles action wrapped up for the Blue Demons after the No. 57 ranked duo and No. 1 seed of Shupenia and Mitrea and the duo of Lancranjan and Cozac failed to make it past Round 16.
Shupenia and Mitrea dropped their match to a duo from Michigan State 8-6 while Lancranjan and Cozac fell to a pair from Wisconsin 8-5.
Round 16 of the singles draw is set to begin at 1 p.m. Central time tomorrow.
