CHICAGO - There is definitely a winner-take-all mentality encompassing the end of the BIG EAST Conference season as teams fight for playoff seeds in the BIG EAST Championship tournament.
DePaul (11-3-4, 5-1-2) comes into the league finale on Friday with 17 points in the standings, tied for second with Georgetown. St. John's is on top with 19 points. The top two teams receive a bye in the first round of the conference tournament.
The Blue Demons will face long-time rival Marquette (8-6-4, 5-2-1) which is just one point behind coach Erin Chastain's team and also shooting for that first-round bye. The 2 p.m. match at Wish Field will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
DePaul is led by Elise Wyatt (11 goals, four assists) who is among the nation's leading goal scorers. Freshman Franny Cerny has six goals and five assists while classmate Madeline Frick and sophomore Alexa Ben have four goals and seven assists. Junior Abby Reed has contributed five goals and four assists.
On Thursday, Wyatt was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for the second year in a row and becomes eligible for the Academic All-America Team. She was Academic All-America Third Team last season. In addition, Ben was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team.
The Blue Demons have outscored opponents 38-11 and have a 135-49 advantage in shots on goal. They have outpointed teams 109-29 and outshot them 270-116.
Marquette is 4-0-1 in its last five games including last week's 1-0 result over Butler. The Golden Eagles have outscored their opponents 27-24 with a 117-72 advantage in shots on goal.
Darian Powell leads the team with six goals and one assist. Liz Bartels has three goals and four assists while Jacie Jermier has two goals and five assists. Molly Pfeiffer, Ashley Handwork and Morgan Proffitt each have three goals.
Last Week: DePaul went 0-1-1 with a 2-0 loss at Providence and a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Georgetown... the Blue Demons' high-powered attack was shut out for only the fourth time this season in the Rhode Island setback... DePaul trailed Georgetown 1-0 until the 80th minute when Elizabeth Endy scored her first goal of the season.
Network Lineup: The BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) will showcase DePaul eight times in the BIG EAST season, and this week will be the eighth appearance.... the BEDN is a partnership between the league and FOX Sports to create a conference-specific, year-round HD digital channel via FOX Sports' mobile application, FOX Sports GO.
Series History: Marquette leads the series 13-4-1... last season, DePaul came away with a 3-2 victory at Valley Fields during the conference season... the two teams had a rematch in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals that ended in a scoreless tie... Jessica Weaver had the winning goal in the ensuing shootout.
National Scene: DePaul was ranked No. 21 in the inaugural 2015 NSCAA National Poll, marking the first time the Blue Demons have opened the season ranked among the nation's Top 25... they started out at No. 12 in the first Soccer America Top 25... DePaul is not ranked this week in the Soccer America poll... the Blue Demons are No. 14 in the nation in shutout percentage, No. 18 in goals-against average (GAA), No. 24 in goals, No. 25 in assists and No. 27 in points... goalkeeper Alex Godinez is No. 26 in GAA (0.62) and Elise Wyatt is No. 30 in goals with 11.
Conference Scene: The Blue Demons are leading the BIG EAST in points and are tied for the league lead in goals, assists and shutouts... Wyatt is second in goals and tied for second in points...Madeline Frick and Alexa Ben are tied for fourth in assists... Godinez is first in shutouts and GAA... Cerny has won the weekly Freshman award four times in a row.
Notable: Wyatt was the NSCAA and BIG EAST Player of the Week on Oct. 12 after a hat trick and two assists in two games... she set the school's all-time career record for goals (34)with the hat trick against Butler... she also won both awards on Aug. 31 after five goals in two games... Wyatt is the only player in the country to win the NSCAA award twice.
By the Numbers: DePaul has racked up a school-record 11 shutouts and is outscoring its opponents 38-11... the Blue Demons have a 33-7 edge in assists and 109-29 in points... they are outshooting teams 270-116 and have a 135-49 advantage in shots on goal... Wyatt leads the team with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points... she needs two more goals to set the DePaul single-season record... Cerny has six goals and five assists... Frick has four goals and seven assists... Ben has four goals and seven assists.... Reed has five goals and four assists.
