EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A successful trip to the SIU-Edwardsville John Flamer Invitational on Saturday afternoon ended with DePaul women's cross country earning a second place finish, an individual champion in Courtney Tedeschi and the men's team taking third place at the invitational.
Tedeschi was first across the line for the women's 6K with a time of 22:07.4 and a pace of 5:56/mile. She is the first individual champion on the women's side since 2010. Tedeschi finished just over seven seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher and 21 seconds ahead of the next DePaul runner, Paige Skorseth at 22:28.4.
Skorseth finished fifth, followed by Jessica Sanborn in sixth with a time of 22:36.2 and Katerina Cirone in seventh at 22:42.0. Christine Mujica rounded out the top-five for the Blue Demons in 13th at 22:59.4, the second-highest freshman finisher in the race.
In the team standings, the women placed second just two points behind Washington. The Blue Demons defeated host SIU-Edwardsville, Saint Joseph's, McKendree, Quincy and Missouri Baptist.
"I was really happy for the women's team today," said coach Leah Bohr. "It would have been nice for us to edge out Washington for the win, but I am pleased with how the ladies competed. We had a lot of PR's today and it's always fun to have an individual champion. Courtney is really starting to find her groove."
Jake Pecorin was the top finisher for the men in 14th with a time of 25:58.8. Jeremy Lozano completed the 8K course in 26:04.1 for 16th place. Daniel Peterson grabbed a top-three team finish in 20th at 26:12.3.
Regen Hatcher and Steve McEvilly closed out the top-five for DePaul. Hatcher registered a time of 26:45.4, while McEvilly crossed the line at 26:49.1.
DePaul finished tied for third with Saint Joseph's, but registered a better average time than Saint Joseph's. The Blue Demons placed behind SIU-Edwardsville and Washington and outran Missouri Valley and McKendree.
"The men were vulnerable without our top two guys (Chris Korabik and Alex Campanella) today," said Bohr. "But it was nice to see some guys step up. Jake Pecorin had a nice PR today and stepped up for the team. We will look for some risk-taking by this team in the next meet."
The Blue Demons return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. CT for the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill. The Friday races are the final tune-ups before the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31.
