Shupenia, Mitrea Head to California for Competition

CHICAGO- Junior Yuliya Shupenia and graduate senior Rebeca Mitrea from the DePaul women's tennis team are set to compete among the country's best collegiate women's tennis players tomorrow at the ITA All-American Championship in California.
The entire tournament spans Oct. 3-11, with pre-qualifying rounds being completed over the weekend. Shupenia and Mitrea already qualified for the qualifying rounds taking place Oct. 6-7. Main draw contests go underway Oct. 8 followed by singles and doubles finals wrapping up the event Oct. 11.
Shupenia is ranked No. 119 in singles, while pairing up with Mitrea to be listed as the No. 57 duo in the country.
Shupenia takes on Luisa Stefani from Pepperdine in singles play while on the doubles front, challenges a pair from Brigham Young University with Mitrea.
Last year, Shupenia finished her first season with the Blue Demons 28-5 overall. The Belarus native went undefeated in singles and doubles action during BIG EAST play. As a result, Shupenia was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year and was selected to the All-BIG EAST Conference squad.
Mitrea returns for her fifth year as a graduate student after finishing last season with the most overall wins in singles. Mitrea earned the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Championship and was part of the senior to class to earn back-to-back BIG EAST titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
In doubles action, the duo went 11-2 in dual action and 12-2 overall at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
The ITA All-American Championship is taking place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The event is the second national championship tournament of the 2015-16 season.
