DePaul Defeats Cross-Town Rival UIC in Straight Sets

CHICAGO - Taking a break from the BIG EAST slate, DePaul defeated UIC in straight sets at home Tuesday night, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19). The Blue Demons improve to 14-11 after the victory, while UIC drops to 12-15.
Callie Huebener closed the match with a match-high 12 kills on 29 attacks. The outside hitter committed just one attacking error on the night. She added eight digs and a service ace to her night.
Caitlyn Coffey followed behind with nine kills, while Jameson MacPhie recorded eight kills for the Blue Demons.
Colleen Smith ended her night with 34 assists and five kills over the three sets.
Defensively, Tyler Graham collected a match-high 10 digs and Jasmine King blocked a match-high four attacks.
DePaul finished the match with a .382 hitting percentage, compared to .144 from the Flames. UIC committed 18 attacking errors, while DePaul had 10 on the night.
A fresh week saw DePaul jump out to an 8-2 lead off of four errors by UIC. DePaul's lead peaked at eight points after Coffey secured a kill coming out of a UIC timeout. The Flames cut the deficit down to one, 16-15, after Tracy Friel put away an attack for UIC to cap a 4-0 rally. DePaul answered with a 4-0 run of its own and rode the lead until the end of the frame, 25-19.
The second set had both sides battling back-and-forth for an early advantage. UIC tied the match off a DePaul attacking error to set the score at 13-13 before the Blue Demons broke the set open. Starting with a Huebener kill, DePaul went on a 10-1 run to comfortably set up the Blue Demons for the second set win, 25-15.
A back-and-forth start to the third set that featured nine ties and seven lead changes between the two teams. The latest tie was at 12-12 after a Tracy Friel service ace. Three straight points from DePaul put them into the driver's seat for the set. Stephenee Yancy recorded a kill late to make the score, 23-19, but a King kill and Graham service ace solidified the win for DePaul.
Tuesday night was the final non-conference match for the Blue Demons as they pick back up with BIG EAST action on Friday against Georgetown. Friday's match is set for a 7 p.m. CT start.
