CHICAGO - For the final match of an eight-match homestand, DePaul battled the number one team in the BIG EAST Creighton to four sets, but lost 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19). The Blue Demons fall to 15-12 on the year (3-11 BIG EAST), while Creighton remains at the top of the standings with a 14-1 conference record.
Jasmine King recorded a career-high 14 kills and eight blocks on Saturday night. King finished the match with a .281 hitting percentage off of 32 total attacks.
Brittany Maxwell was the only other Blue Demon to reach double-digit kills. The freshman had 11 on 25 attacks and just one error.
Jameson MacPhie and Caitlyn Coffey stopped six attacks each and helped DePaul reach 15 team blocks for the first time since Sept. 23, 2011.
Jaali Winters led the Bluejays with 18 kills and added 14 digs for a double-double.
Creighton jumped to an 11-3 lead after a DePaul attacking error. DePaul wasted no time in getting back into the match with a 6-0 run that cut the lead to two. The two sides traded points throughout the rest of the set, but it was the Bluejays that slowly built a lead late. With set point on the line, Winters put away the final kill of the set to put Creighton up, 1-0.
It was a close contest in the second set with seven ties and five lead changes. Neither side gained an advantage of more than four throughout the set. Late in the frame, DePaul pulled away to take a three-point lead, 21-18. The cushion was enough for the Blue Demons to hold and even the match at one apiece after a Creighton attacking error.
The third set was Creighton's for the taking after an early advantage put the Bluejays in the driver's seat. DePaul would not make it easy for Creighton as the Blue Demons brought the match within one on three occasions and tied the set at 23-all on a Maxwell kill and Creighton attacking error. After a Creighton timeout, back-to-back points for the Bluejays helped them regain the match lead.
In the closest match of the night, the two BIG EAST teams fought back-and-forth, registering 11 ties and five lead changes in the set. With the score set at 14-14, Creighton produced a crucial 3-0 rally and forced a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons went back-and-forth with the Bluejays late, but ran out of time as Winters solidified the match on a kill to win the set, 25-19.
The Blue Demons hit the road next weekend for their next set of matches as they take on Providence (11/14) and St. John's (11/15).
