EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It came down to a third-set tiebreaker in the final match of the day, but the No. 38 DePaul women's tennis team held off a red-hot Michigan State Spartans squad on Saturday morning in East Lansing, Mich.
DePaul improves to 9-3 with the win, while Michigan State falls to 9-2.
With the contest tied at three, only senior Patricia Fargas' match against Aslina Chua in the No. 3 singles slot was left to be decided. After Chua took the first set, 7-5, Fargas rallied back to knot things up thanks to a 6-2 victory in set two. In the decisive third set, Fargas won a 7-3 tiebreaker to take the match, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). For Fargas, it was her eighth dual win of the spring (8-1) and fourth in the No. 3 position (4-1).
"This was just a fantastic college tennis match," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "The MSU players and fans made it a tough but really fun atmosphere for a match. When it comes down to 3-3 and the last match, there is no other kid I have ever coached I would want out there playing for the match than Patricia. She is a true warrior. She had some tough breaks go against her but still found a way. She is injured, not close to 100 percent but she always puts her team and the program ahead of all else. We are so lucky to have her."
DePaul jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Saturday thanks to wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Fargas and Jasmin Kling, the nation's No. 39 doubles pair, defeated Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot, 6-3, and Rebeca Mitrea paired up with Yuliya Shupenia to defeat Catherine Parenteau and Allie Baer at No. 2 doubles, 6-4.
Prior to Fargas' win at No. 3 singles, Mitrea beat Trouillot, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 5 match and Zaina Sufi held off Emily Meyers at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
DePaul continues its road trip tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against IPFW.
