Women's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader in Chicago

CHICAGO -- The DePaul women's tennis team improved to 12-3 overall on Saturday afternoon with a pair of home victories over Northern Illinois and Milwaukee.
The victories marked the third and fourth straight for the No. 32 Blue Demons. Northern Illinois fell to 8-2 with the loss, while Milwaukee dropped to 2-9.
In the opener, DePaul took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to grab a 1-0 advantage over NIU. At No. 2 doubles, Rebeca Mitrea and Yuliya Shupenia defeated Mary Malkin and Evelyn Youel, 7-5, and Zaina Sufi and Jarret Fisher swept Jennifer Gates and Arantza De La Torre at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.
DePaul then took 5-of-6 singles matches to secure the 6-1 victory.
Jasmin Kling defeated De La Torree, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and Mitrea knocked off Abigail Dekkinga, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 5 match. Sufi had no problems with Gates in the No. 6 position, winning 6-3, 6-1, and Patricia Fargas beat Malkin in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 slot. Patricia Lancranjan won her match at No. 2 singles over Cristina Alvarez as well.
In nightcap, DePaul swept Milwaukee, 7-0, for its 12th win of the year. The Blue Demons won all nine matches that were played, starting with all three doubles contests, each of which ended with a 6-2 final.
Kling and Lancranjan defeated Alysa Straub and Christina Colarossi in the No. 1 position, Mitrea and Shupenia topped Chelsea Bailey and Hayley Marshall at No. 2 doubles and Sufi and Fisher won the No. 3 match over Mardee Merar and Dana Shannon.
In singles play, all six matches were decided in two sets, beginning with Fisher's clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Aerielle Pendleton in the No. 6 match. Lancranjan beat Bailey, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Shupenia defeated Marshall by the same score in the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 spot, Kling beat Shannon, 6-2, 6-2, Mitrea won her No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-3, over Straub and Sufi won a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Colarossi in the No. 5 contest.
DePaul's next scheduled match is three weeks from today in Evanston, Ill., against Long Beach State.
