ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 37 DePaul used a gutsy effort to give No. 11 Michigan everything it could handle on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor but the Blue Demons ultimately came up two points short. DePaul fell 4-2 to the Wolverines in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
DePaul's season comes to a close at 22-5 overall. Michigan, meanwhile, will move on to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen next week. The Wolverines, who are now 26-3 in 2015, surrendered two points to the Blue Demons, the first time they gave up two points in a match since March 15 and only the eighth time it has happened this season.
DePaul found itself in a 1-0 hole after the conclusion of doubles play. Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook and Sara Remynse defeated No. 87 Zaina Sufi and Rebeca Mitrea, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles and Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky topped Yuliya Shupenia and Ana Vladutu in the No. 2 match, 8-4.
But after Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to a win by No. 111 Sarah Lee at No. 3 singles, DePaul battled back.Â
First, Mitrea defeated Remynse, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles to make it a 2-1 score and Patricia Fargas leveled the match with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alex Najarian in the No. 4 position.
DePaul, however, couldn't scratch another point on the board. The Wolverines took a 3-2 lead when No. 27 Emina Bektas outlasted Shupenia, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles before Ruder-Hook won a tough 6-4, 6-4 decision over Jasmin Kling in the No. 5 singles match. Patricia Lancranjan was leading No. 31 Yurovsky, 3-1, in the third set when the match was stopped.
The Blue Demons' 2015 season featured their second consecutive BIG EAST Conference Tournament championship and second-straight 20-win year.
Saturday's match was also the final contest for seniors Fargas and Kling, who went 12-3 together in dual doubles play and combined to go 34-7 in dual singles matches this season. Their final doubles win together was in yesterday's first round match against Kentucky, when the duo won a thrilling 8-7 (2) decision at No. 1 doubles.
