ATLANTA - DePaul volleyball (8-1) won its second invitational of the season by defeating host Georgia State (4-6) on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19). Randi Leath was the invitational's MVP and joined teammates Caitlyn Coffey and Brittany Maxwell on the All-Tournament team.
Three Blue Demons finished the afternoon with double-digit kills. Maxwell led the team with 17, while Coffey recorded 16 and Callie Huebener tallied 10.
Huebener also closed Saturday with 14 digs. Tyler Graham had a team-best 15 digs against Georgia State. Maxwell helped DePaul on the defensive end by recording five block assists.
Colleen Smith surpassed 50-plus assists for the second time this weekend with a match-high 51 assists.
Leath had a solid overall day with five kills on 19 attacks, three block assists and one service ace.
The first two sets of the match showed promise for a tight contest Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled to an 11-11 score in the first set. The Blue Demons broke away with a 6-0 run shortly after and took a 17-11 lead. Georgia State crawled back into the match to tie it at 24-all, but the comeback was stopped short after a kill from Maxwell and a service ace from Leath earned DePaul the first set, 26-24.
Neither team could produce a big rally in the second set. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the second frame to bring the score to 23-23. After a Coffey kill to tie it 24, Georgia State posted back-to-back points to win the second set.
A quick lead of 13-8 placed the Blue Demons in the driver's seat for the third set. Georgia State brought the score back within two, 13-11, and seemed to have the home court momentum. A set by Smith and kill by Maxwell stopped the Panther rally and started what would be an 11-1 run by the Blue Demons. DePaul took set point after a Georgia State error and grabbed the 2-1 match advantage.
DePaul started the fourth set with a 5-0 run and never looked back. The Blue Demons built their lead to 10, 23-13, with back-to-back kills by Coffey and closed the match on a Smith set, Gallop kill to win Saturday afternoon, 3-1.
Today marks the eighth win in a row for the Blue Demons as they prepare for the final invitational of the year next weekend, hosted by Bradley. DePaul faces UTEP, SE Missouri State and Bradley in Peoria, Ill.
