MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Myke Henry's double-double, clutch second-half play by Billy Garrett Jr. and timely defensive stops led DePaul to a thrilling 57-56 win at Marquette on Wednesday. Henry totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds while Garrett converted a game-winning three-point play with 1.1 seconds on the clock.
The game featured 12 ties and nine lead changes with the final lead change coming on the heroics of Garrett. Following a tip-in by Marquette's Duane Wilson to give the Golden Eagles a two-point lead, Garrett took the ball the length of the court and his driving layup drew a foul. The junior calmly stepped to the line and knocked down the ensuing free throw to give the Blue Demons the one point advantage.
Marquette's half-court attempt at the buzzer was unsuccessful and DePaul (7-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) grabbed its first win in Milwaukee since February 2000.
After a three-pointer by R.J. Curington ended the first half with DePaul holding a 26-22 lead, the second half saw take a five-point advantage on an Eli Cain jumper with 18:43 on the clock.
The Blue Demons held the advantage until the midway point of the second half when Marquette tied the score at 40-40. DePaul answered with a Garrett three-pointer followed by a Rashaun Stimage dunk quickly post a five-point advantage.
Marquette (12-7, 2-5 BIG EAST) answered with a 12-2 run for a five-point advantage of its own and led, 52-47 at the five-minute mark.
The final five minutes saw DePaul tie the score three times, but the Blue Demons didn't retake the lead until Garrett's free throw to conclude the night's scoring.
Garrett scored all 14 of his points in the second half and Henry turned in his second double-double in the last five games. Stimage added eight points and three steals followed by six from Tommy Hamilton IV.
Marquette was led by 19 points from Duane Wilson and 11 by Henry Ellenson.
The Blue Demons are off for a week before traveling to Butler on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Start time at Hinkle Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network and WSCR 670 The Score.
Postgame Notes: DePaul extended its streak to 695 straight games with a three-pointer... the win was the first for DePaul at Marquette since a 55-35 win on Feb. 16, 2000... Myke Henry's 12 rebounds matched his career high... the double-double was his second of the season and fourth of his career... Henry also has four games this season with nine rebounds and double-figure points... the win was the first for Dave Leitao at Marquette... he is now 3-4 all-time against the Golden Eagles... the Blue Demons have outrebounded their opponent in 14 of 19 games overall and six of seven BIG EAST games...
