Volleyball Falls to Xavier in Four Sets

CHICAGO - DePaul opened a four-game home stand by dropping a four-set match against Xavier, 3-1 (25-17 25-16, 16-25, 25-21). The Blue Demons fall to 5-3 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier improves to 4-3.
Colleen Smith finished the match with a double-double at 36 assists and 11 digs for the senior's 11th double-double of the season. Smith has recorded a double-double in eight of the last nine matches.
Myah Reed led the Blue Demons attack with 16 kills. Brittany Maxwell notched ten kills and three blocks.
Haley Bueser led the defense with 14 digs. The junior also added two service aces.
The first set saw seven ties between the two sides with Xavier fending off a DePaul attack. The latest tie came when Reed secured a kill off an assist by Jasmine King to make the score 17-all. After Xavier was forced to call a timeout, the Musketeers answered with an 8-0 run to win the first set.
Xavier got off to a strong start in set number two with an 8-3 lead before the Blue Demons began to battle back. DePaul went on a 5-0 rally to tie the frame at 8-8. Three different 4-0 runs helped the Musketeers break away from DePaul and go on to win the set.
The tables turned in the third frame when DePaul jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Xavier cut the lead to one before the Blue Demons went on a 5-1 run to take the lead to five at 10-5. Late in the set, the Blue Demons built their advantage to 10 when Bueser secured a service ace to make the score 23-13. DePaul cruised to a set victory thanks to a Claire Anderson set point kill from Smith.
In the fourth set, DePaul and Xavier battled to a 10-10 tie. Xavier produced the next four points to grab the lead and built that lead to five at 17-12, forcing a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons began to crawl back into the set and forced two Xavier attacking errors to cut the lead to two. Late in the set, the two sides traded points, but the final point went to Xavier off a Sofia Peterson kill.
The DePaul home stand continues on Saturday, Oct. 15 when the Blue Demons face Marquette. The match between the Blue Demons and Golden Eagles is set for a 6 p.m. CT start.
