Shupenia Advances at the ITA Midwest Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Yuliya Shupenia from the DePaul women's tennis team clinched her singles match Saturday to advance in the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan State.
Shupenia received a first round bye, but went on to defeat Daniela Pedrazza-Novak from Illinois 6-3, 6-4 to reach round 16 status. She is set to take on Brooke Broda from Notre Dame on Sunday.
In the rest of singles action, the Patricia Lancranjan won her first match 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over Erin Faulkner from Michigan State, but fell to Anna Sanford from Ohio State 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in round two.
Despite advancing from the qualifying singles bracket, freshmen Florence Abbott and Aspasia Avgeri dropped their matches in the main singles draw. Mira Ruder-Hook from Michigan defeated Abbott 6-2, 6-2 as Ferny Angeles Paz from Ohio State bested Avgeri 6-4, 6-2.
Ana Vladutu fell in the first round to Davina Nguyen from Michigan State 6-3, 6-2.
Doubles action resumes tomorrow where Shupenia and Avgeri prepare to challenge Broda and Monica Robinson from Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. Shupenia and Avgeri defeated Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus from Ohio State 8-5 to secure their spot among the top eight tandems.
