Volleyball Drops Match to Xavier

CINCINNATI - DePaul and Xavier split the first two sets, but Xavier claimed the final two sets to win 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19). DePaul falls to 13-16 (7-10 BIG EAST) and Xavier moves to 18-12 (12-5 BIG EAST).
Caitlyn Coffey led the way with 14 kills and added five blocks. Coffey hit for .583 with zero errors.
Colleen Smith recorded a double-double by reaching 37 assists and 11 digs.
Haley Bueser had a team-high 15 digs for the Blue Demons.
DePaul trailed early in the first set, but cut the Xavier lead to one, 4-3, thanks to a Jameson MacPhie kill. Xavier built its lead as the set continued. The Musketeers grabbed a lead of 10 at 24-14 before DePaul went on a run. A 4-0 by DePaul brought the Blue Demons within six, but a service error on set point gave Xavier the first set.
The two sides battled to a 7-7 tie before DePaul broke the set open with 4-0 run. The Blue Demons built their lead to as large as eight at 21-13 and forced a Xavier timeout. Xavier cut the lead to three on two different occasions, but DePaul answered the Musketeer push with a set-point clincher off a Coffey kill.
Similar to the second set, the two sides went back and forth in the third frame to tie at 12-all. The Musketeers broke the tie with a 6-0 rally. Xavier held the Blue Demons long enough to win the set 25-19.
In the deciding fourth set, the two sides traded points and were deadlocked at 14-all. Xavier slowly built its lead to five, including a score of 24-19. On set point, a final kill from Xavier sealed the match for the Musketeers.
The Blue Demons close their 2016 season against Butler on Sunday, Nov. 20. DePaul and Butler meet at noon CT.
