DePaul Loses a Heartbreaker at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - It was a heartbreaking way to be eliminated from the BIG EAST Championship Friday at Shaw Field.
After 110 pulsating minutes encompassing regulation play and two overtimes, it came down to a BIG EAST semifinal shootout between DePaul and Georgetown.
On the fifth and final penalty kick, the Blue Demons hit the crossbar and Georgetown advanced to the BIG EAST title game 5-4 on PKs. The official score of the semifinal match was 1-1 in double overtime.
The match certainly had much more upbeat beginning.
Talk about a direct attack, Taylor Schissler launched an 80-yard ball that bounced all the way into the Hoyas' box in the 18th minute.
Franny Cerny outraced a Georgetown defender down the center of the box and flicked a shot past goalkeeper Ariell Schechtman for a 1-0 lead.
A DePaul backline of Schissler, Elizabeth Endy, Kelli Hubly and Avery Hay limited the Hoyas to three shots in the first 45 minutes---none on goal.
In the 65th minute, Marina Paul found the equalizer after a deflected corner kick as Georgetown's offense came to life in the second half.
Notes
- DePaul and Georgetown each took nine shots, and the Blue Demons had a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
- Cerny had four shots with two on goal while Schissler had two shots on goal.
- The 45 goals this season ended up one shy of the school record set by the 2004 team.
- Abby Reed's 11 goals in 2016 finished one away from the season record she shares with Julianne Sitch (2003) and Elise Wyatt (2015). Reed notched her dozen in 2014.
- Reed has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
- Junior Alexa Ben is second all-time in career assists with 21, five back of Sitch (2002-05).
- Senior Reed is third in career goals with 27 and Ben is fourth with 20.
- Reed is third in career points with 67 and Ben is fourth with 61.
