
Women's Tennis Takes Second at the BIG EAST Championship

CAYCE, S.C. - The No. 70 DePaul women's tennis team fell 4-2 in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament title match to Xavier Sunday afternoon at Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
After Xavier took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point, DePaul's (14-8) Rebeca Mitrea fought back to tie the match at 1-1. She recorded the first singles point at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Brinker.
DePaul pulled ahead 2-1 as Patricia Lancranjan defeated Cristina DiLorenzo at No. 2 6-4, 6-4.
The Musketeers didn't let DePaul have its first lead of the match for long. Xavier's Sydney Liggins responded with 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot over Yuliya Shupenia to tie the match again at 2-2.
From there, Xavier took the next two singles rounds to reach four points first for the Conference title. Marina Cozac fell to Amina Ismail at No. 3 6-2, 3-6, 0-4. At No. 6 singles, Jarret Fisher lost to Lauren Ghidotti 7-5, 6-3.
With the win, Xavier earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
