Jenkins, Maize, Mitrea Winners of BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Awards

July 11, 2016 NEW YORK - The BIG EAST Conference has announced the winners of the 2015-16 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
DePaul's Chanise Jenkins, Morgan Maize and Rebeca Mitrea were selected for women's basketball, softball and women's tennis among the 22 honorees. DePaul, Marquette and St. John's each has three winners to lead the league.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
The list of 22 honorees includes 16 seniors, three juniors and three graduate students. Fourteen of the winners competed in the NCAAs in their respective sports this past year. Fifteen were or have been BIG EAST Players of the Year or Individual BIG EAST Championship winners. DePaul, Marquette and St. John's each had three student-athletes make the list; Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier had two; Butler, Creighton and Temple, an affiliate member in women's lacrosse, had one.
Jenkins concluded her DePaul career ranked among all-time leaders in scoring, three-pointers, free throw percentage, assist and steals while her 141 career games are a program record. The 2016 BIG EAST Player of the Year was also a member of the 2014 and 2015 BIG EAST Tournament Championship teams and holds a grad cumulative GPA of 3.74 and an undergrad cumulative GPA of 3.481 with a degree in Communication and Media. Jenkins was also a 2015-16 WBCA Honorable Mention All-American and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American as well as a 2016 All-BIG EAST First Team selection and four-time Academic All-BIG EAST honoree.
Maize led the softball team in 2016 both in the circle and at the plate and was named the 2016 BIG EAST Player of the Year. She holds a cumulative GPA of 3.775 with a degree in Psychology and Sociology. Maize was a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team member in 2016 and 2015 in addition to helping the Blue Demons to a pair of BIG EAST Regular Season Championships. She was a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree.
Mitrea was a 2016 ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner, ITA Midwest Regional Cassie Leary Award for Sportsmanship honoree and a four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. Addtionally, she was a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree with a graduate school cumulative GPA of 3.763 in Finance that follows a Business degree with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.02. Mitrea qualified for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship this season and was the 2015 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player along with being named a two-time BIG EAST All-Conference honoree and leading the Blue Demons to conference titles in 2014 and 2015.
