CORVALLIS, Ore. - Erik Rodriguez got the Blue Demons off to a fast start Friday night in their season opener at Oregon State.
Getting his senior year off on the right foot, Rodriguez scored in the 10th minute on a through ball from newcomer Stijn van der Slot as DePaul finished in a 1-1, double-overtime tie at the Hensor/Zaher Classic.
Coach Craig Blazer's side had the lead until the 21st minute when Oregon State found the equalizer. Jaime Miralles launched a cross off a set piece and Jordan Jones connected on a header.
The Blue Demons had the statistical edge in the first half, outshooting the host team 7-3 with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner kicks.
After that, the Beavers outshot the DePaul 15-3 with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks. DePaul's defense blocked an Oregon State shot midway through the second OT and goalkeeper Quentin Low's fourth save of the game maintained the tie.
The Blue Demons close out the Classic on Sunday with a 7 p.m. match at Portland.
