DePaul Leads BIG EAST with Six Team Academic Awards

CHICAGO – DePaul earned six BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards to lead the conference as the honors were announced by the league office on Thursday. A total of 22 teams from the league’s sports have been recognized for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
Eight BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored as the Blue Demons led the league with six teams recognized. Creighton had five teams earn the sport honor followed by Seton Hall with three and Butler, Georgetown and St. John’s with two teams each. Villanova had one team and Temple as an affiliate BIG EAST member earned the award in women’s lacrosse.
The list of honored DePaul teams includes women's indoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, men's soccer, softball, women's tennis and volleyball.
The 2015-16 honors mark the sixth straight year that DePaul has led the BIG EAST with eight teams recognized in 2012-13 and 2014-15 while five teams earned honors in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2013-14. The winners were chosen based on the 2015-16 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Since 2008-09, the DePaul's women's basketball, women’s cross country, golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field and volleyball teams have all earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence at least once.
In the last eight academic years DePaul has totaled 48 programs to earn the league's Team Academic Excellence Award with a department-best eight teams in 2014-15 and 2012-13.
