NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In one of the biggest meets of the 2016 cross country season, the DePaul cross country team had multiple individuals earn top-50 performances at the National Catholic Championships on Friday.
Courtney Tedeschi was the first Blue Demon across the line at 26th place among D-I student-athletes with a time of 18:42.7. Friday was the season debut for Tedeschi. Paige Skorseth and Batya Beard finished back-to-back in the 5k race. Skorseth came in 49th at 19:07.0 and Beard was right behind in 50th with a time of 19:08.6.
"It was good to have Tedeschi back in the mix, she and Paige ran well up front for us," said assistant coach Derrick Peterson. "Batya again had another solid race in her freshman season."
Jessica Harris in 56th (19:23.0) and Lauren Sharp in 65th (19:46.3) rounded out the DePaul women's top-five.
Chris Korabik sprinted the final stretch of the men's five-mile race to earn a team-high finish of 14th with a time of 25:55.4. Jake Pecorin claimed a top-30 finish in 30th and a time of 26:26.3. Alex Campanella was the third men's Blue Demon to finish in the top-50 by placing 43rd at 26:58.1.
"Korabik and Pecorin ran good races for us today upfront," stated Peterson. "It was great seeing them finish running fast and passing people in the late stages of the race."
Jeremy Lozano took 52nd at 27:12.0 and Salomon Wright finished 56th at 27:27.2 to help the Blue Demons in the team standings.
The women's team defeated Niagara to place 10th in the team standings and were only 12 points off of Detroit for ninth.
"Overall the ladies ran a smart controlled race on tired legs from training," said Peterson. "It will be good to see the progress when we are back on this course in two weeks."
On the men's side, DePaul placed seventh out of 11 qualifying teams. The Blue Demons recorded a score of 190, edging BIG EAST foe Xavier by four points.
"It was good to see us racing and competing with fellow BIG EAST teams," stated Peterson. "In the JV race, both Noah Deck and Steve McEvilly ran really well for the Blue Demons."
Deck had the top team finish in the JV race in 17th with a time of 28:10.7.
The teams split up over the next two weeks. The men head to the Badger Classic next Friday, while the women have the next weekend off before competing at the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 30.
