Furious Comeback Highlights Win Over Providence

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Billy Garrett Jr. saved the heroics for the final buzzer once again as his three-point play led a DePaul comeback over Providence at Allstate Arena. His three-point play gave the Blue Demons a dramatic 64-63 win that saw them finish the game with a 20-8 run over the final 4:48.
DePaul trailed by 11 points before closing the game with the impressive run. With DePaul trailing, 55-44, Garrett started the run with a three-pointer. Four different players scored during the run and DePaul combined to go 9-for-9 from the free throw line down the stretch.
Following Garrett's three, Brandon Cyrus hit two free throws and Eli Cain knocked down four in-a-row. The Blue Demons applied full-court pressure and Devin Gage converted a steal and score on a lay-up to pull DePaul within three with 1:22 on the clock.
The final 82 seconds saw back-to-back jumpers by Cain and Garrett followed by two more Garrett free throws before his final three-point play to give DePaul the one-point lead with five seconds left. Providence nearly took back the lead just before the buzzer, but Kyron Cartwright's shot rolled off the rim as time expired.
The visiting Friars opened the game by scoring seven of the first nine points. DePaul (8-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) answered with an 8-2 run with two free throws by Gage pushing the Blue Demons ahead seven minutes into the evening.
With just under six minutes left in the first half, Chris Harrison-Docks knocked down a three-pointer to pull DePaul within three at 24-21. Providence outscored the Blue Demons, 11-5, over the remainder of the opening frame to take a 35-26 lead at halftime.
Garrett finished the game with 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals while Cyrus added 10 points, six board and two steals. Cain totaled 10 points with four rebounds three assists and three steals and McCallum finished the night with eight points and eight points, eight boards and four steals. Joe Hanel just missed finishing in double-figures with nine points to go along with three rebounds and two blocked shots.
Providence (11-7, 1-4 BIG EAST) was led by Rodney Bullock's 18 points and six rebounds. Emmitt Holt added 13 points with eight rebounds.
DePaul travels to Milwaukee on Saturday to face Marquette at 1 p.m. The 119th meeting between the two programs can be seen on FOX Sports Networks and 670 The Score.
Postgame Notes
- DePaul has erased a double-figure deficit in the second half five times this season... the Blue Demons trailed by 12 with 8:26 left and by 11 with 4:49 left tonight against Providence.
- Eli Cain passed the 600-point plateau in his 48th career game tonight.
- Brandon Cyrus recorded his fourth game this season in double-figures and first in BIG EAST play.
- Billy Garrett Jr. moved from 17th to 15th on DePaul's all-time scoring list... he passed Quemont Greer (1,397 points, 2001-05) and Terry Cummings (1,398 points, 1979-82)... Garrett has 1,410 career points.
- Garrett moved into a tie for 13th with Quentin Richardson (1998-00) on the three-point field goal list... Garrett has 117 career three-pointers.
- Providence leads the series, 27-10... DePaul has won two of the last three meetings.
