Blue Demons Fall in Overtime Against Butler

ROSEMONT, Ill. - DePaul couldn't hold off No. 13/14 Butler and fell in overtime, 70-69, on Saturday afternoon at Allstate Arena. Eli Cain scored a career-high 32 points and Tre'Darius McCallum recorded a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.
It was a tale of two halves in the first half as DePaul opened the game quickly and led 25-5 seven minutes into the afternoon. Butler responded and outscored the Blue Demons, 26-8, over the rest of the first half and DePaul held a 33-31 lead at halftime.
Cain led the Blue Demons in the first half as he poured in 21 points in his 19 minutes of action.
Butler, which led for a total of just 101 seconds the entire game, took a brief lead early in the second half. The Blue Demons answered with a 10-2 run and held a 5-to-9 points advantage until a Kelan Martin free throw made the score 57-53 with 3:53 left in regulation.
The final two minutes saw just three free throws combined for both teams as Cain made one of two with two seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 59-59. In the extra frame, the lead changed hands five times as the two sides combined for 21 points.
After Kamar Baldwin's three-pointer gave Butler (17-3, 6-2 BIG EAST) a two-point advantage with 25 seconds left, Garrett converted a three-point play to push DePaul back ahead by one with 10 seconds on the clock. Garrett's play was nearly identical to the play he made to beat Providence on Jan. 10.
Baldwin once against came through for the Bulldogs by drawing a foul with three seconds left and he converted both free throws with three seconds to go in overtime. On the final possession of the game, Garrett attempted a three-pointer just inside the half-court line that missed at the buzzer.
DePaul (8-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) totaled three players in double-figures with Garrett added 16 to Cain's 32 and McCallum's 15 points. Cain added six rebounds and four assists to his career-high scoring total while Garrett also grabbed six boards with a pair of assists.
Kethan Savage led Butler with 20 points and Baldwin finished with 18.
The Blue Demons are off until next Saturday when they travel to Creighton. The Blue Demons and Bluejays are scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start on FS1 and WSCR 670 AM.
Postgame Notes
- Today was the 520th game for DePaul in Rosemont... the Blue Demons have six games remaining in the facility before moving to Wintrust Arena next season.
- DePaul knocked down at least 10 three-pointers for the third time this season... the season high is 13 against Chicago State... the Blue Demons made 11 against Butler and also totaled 11 against Milwaukee.
- Eli Cain recorded his second 30-point game of the season... it's also his second career game of 30 or more points... prior to today, Cain was averaging just 10.5 points per game over his last eight outings.
- Billy Garrett Jr. continued his trek up the all-time scoring list... he passed Rod Strickland (1,448 points, 1985-88) for 14th on DePaul's scoring chart.
- The game was the first for DePaul in overtime this season... the Blue Demons are now 40-41 all-time in overtime.
- Today was the 13th meeting between the two programs... Butler leads the series, 7-6... the Bulldogs have won six straight meetings.
