Blue Demons Fall at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. - DePaul dropped an 83-66 decision on the road Saturday afternoon against 16th-ranked Creighton. Billy Garrett Jr. scored 18 points to lead the Blue Demons and Brandon Cyrus added 12 with six rebounds.
The Blue Demons started slow and didn't connect on a field goal attempt until Eli Cain's driving jumper with 14:50 on the clock put DePaul on the scoreboard. DePaul didn't warm up throughout the first 20 minutes as the team combined to shoot just 7-of-24 (.250) from the field and trailed, 44-29, at intermission.
DePaul scored the first five points of the second half and pulled to within nine on a three-pointer from Garrett. Creighton answered a three on its next possession and the Bluejays held a double-figure lead until Cain's three from the wing with 7:20 left made the score 67-56.
Following Cain's three, Justin Patton scored on Creighton's next two possessions to start an 8-2 flurry that pushed the Bluejays to a 75-58 advantage with five minutes left in the game.
Garrett added four steals and three assists to his 18 points and Cyrus also posted three assists and two steals. Joe Hanel grabbed nine rebounds and scored eight points and Cain finished with nine points and five assists.
Creighton (19-3, 6-3 BIG EAST) was led Khyri Thomas with 18 points and Marcus Foster with 15 points.
DePaul returns to Allstate Arena on Tuesday night against Georgetown. Start time between the Blue Demons and Hoyas is scheduled for 8 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR 670 The Score.

- Billy Garrett Jr. moved from 14th to 12th on DePaul's all-time scoring list... he finished the game with 1,472 career points... he passed Howie Carl (1,461 points, 1958-61) and Curtis Watkins (1,463 points, 1975-79).
- Garrett went 2-for-2 from the free throw line and now needs five free throws to set DePaul's career record... Garrett has 524 career free throws after today... Stephen Howard (1988-92) holds the record with 528 career free throws.
- Brandon Cyrus recorded his fifth game in double-figures... his two three's mark his first career game with multiple three-pointers.
- DePaul leads the series, 16-15... Creighton has won five straight games in the series.
