ROSEMONT, Ill. - Tre'Darius McCallum's game-tying three went in-and-out with time expiring, as DePaul fell to Georgetown 76-73 Tuesday night at Allstate Arena. Billy Garrett Jr. led the Blue Demons with 25 points and broke the program record for career free throws in the second half.
Georgetown (13-10, 4-6 BIG EAST) opened by the evening by scoring the first 10 points of the game. Following a DePaul time out, the Blue Demons scored the next nine points that included five from Garrett. With 10:29 left in the half, the Blue Demons grabbed their first lead, 19-18, on a Brandon Cyrus layup.
An Eli Cain lay-up knotted the score at 24-24 before Garrett and Joe Hanel led a mini-run to give DePaul a 33-27 lead with 3:12 left in the half. Al Eichelberger was crucial for the Blue Demons during this run, fighting for two offensive put backs on the boards, and finishing a three-point play with a three throw. However, the Hoyas finished the half the way they started the game, on an 8-0 run, to give them a 35-33 lead going into intermission.
Georgetown stretched its lead to nine at 50-41 on a jumper by Jessie Govan eight minutes into the second half. DePaul didn't back down and chipped away until Cain scored 11 straight points for DePaul and his three-point gave the Blue Demons a 55-54 lead with 8:27 left.
Neither side led by more than five over the remainder of the game as DePaul held a 70-67 lead with 2:35 on the clock. A lay-up by Hanel gave the Blue Demons a 73-71 lead with 1:12 left before Georgetown's L.J. Peak scored the final five points of the game. His short jumper with 13 second left gave the Hoyas the final three-point advantage before McCallum's game-tying three just missed at the buzzer.
DePaul (8-14, 1-8 BIG EAST) was led by Garrett's 25 points and 19 from Cain. Cain also grabbed six rebounds with three assists while Hanel finished with six points and five rebounds.
Up next for the Blue Demons is a Saturday afternoon game against Marquette at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons and Golden Eagles meet for the 120th time at 1 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR 670 AM.
