NEW YORK - With the 2017 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship tournament kicking off at multiple campus sites starting Sunday, the Conference announced its annual awards on Saturday tabbing DePaul's Alexa Ben and Franny Cerny with First-Team All-BIG EAST honors while Morgan Turner was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Ben has been a continual fighter for the Blue Demons as the Senior CLASS Award Finalist and MAC Hermann Trophy watch list candidate has scored on seven occasions, including a hat-trick in DePaul's 6-3 win against Villanova on Oct. 22. Saturday's selection is Ben's fourth All-BIG EAST recognition as she also received First Team honors in 2015 and 2016 while being a Second Team selection in 2014. Ben, who was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2016 and Rookie of the Year in 2014, is one of the most decorated Blue Demons in the women's soccer program history. To date, Ben is fourth in goals (27), second in assists (22) and third in points (76) for DePaul.
Cerny led the Blue Demons in scoring with a BIG EAST best 10 goals on 53 shots. The Berkeley, Calif., native recorded 22 points on the season also dishing out two assists. During the 2017 season, Cerny received BIG EAST weekly recognition on three occasions, being named the Conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11 while making the Weekly Honor Roll twice (Oct. 2, Oct. 16). Since joining the DePaul women's soccer team in 2015, Cerny has racked up multiple BIG EAST honors. In 2015, Cerny was selected to the All-Freshman team while being named the Conference's Freshman of the Year. She was also an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2016 as a sophomore.
In her freshman campaign, Turner tallied 10 points, finding the back of the net four times off 26 shots while dishing out two assists. The Maple Grove, Minn., native tallied the game-winning goal against Pepperdine on Sept. 8.
Georgetown led the way with nine total All-BIG EAST Team certificates, including five first-team selections. Butler and DePaul each added a pair of first teamers while Providence's Katie Day rounded out the All-BIG EAST First Team recognitions.
All-BIG EAST Teams and major awards are voted on by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams are comprised of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and one at-large selection. The BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognizes the top-11 freshman vote earners.
