LAFAYETTE, La. - A three-run homer in the fourth inning against Iowa State on Sunday afternoon proved to be the game winner for the DePaul softball team as the Blue Demons defeated the Cyclones 3-1 on the last day of the 31st Annual Louisiana Classics.
Megan Leyva notched the homer for DePaul to take the lead, which would give the Blue Demons (2-3) their second win at the Classics. The home run marked Leyva's first of the season.
Iowa State falls to 2-3 in the defeat.
Kayla Landwehrmier (1-1) earned her first win in the circle for the Blue Demons after pitching four innings and allowing one earned run. Kennedy Garcia recorded a save after pitching for an inning with no hits and a strikeout.
Savannah Sanders suffered the loss for the Cyclones and dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Iowa State got on board first with a run in the first inning. With Kaila Konz on second after a fly out from Rachel Hartman, Kelsey McFarlan knocked a single through the left side for an RBI as Konz rounded third and scored.
The game would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth.
After Nicole Pihl was walked, DePaul replaced the leadoff batter with pinch runner Celeste Franco. Franco advanced to second off a single from Jessica Cothern. Cothern was replaced at first by Brianna Viles as Krista Dalgarn stepped up to bat. Dalgarn's pop up to right field left the two runners on base, but Leyva's hit over the left field fence right after sent them home.
Iowa State failed to notch a hit in the next inning, as the game ended right after due to the Blue Demons' travel plans.
Up next, DePaul heads to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Troy Cox Classic Feb. 17-19. At the tournament, the Blue Demons are set to face Oregon State, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, #15/15 Tennessee and Bradley.
