Extra Innings Puts Softball Past Southern Illinois

LAS VEGAS - DePaul softball defeated Southern Illinois 2-1 in nine innings on Saturday in its final game at the Rebel Classic.
DePaul's (11-8) Megan Leyva went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Haydn Christensen tallied a RBI and run.
Kennedy Garcia recorded her fifth win in the circle for DePaul. She pitched in relief for Missy Zoch, walking two out of the five batters she faced in the ninth inning.
Missy Zoch threw four strikeouts, walked two and allowed five hits and a run in the eight innings she pitched. She faced 31 batters.
Brianna Jones suffered the loss for Southern Illinois (10-13).
After a scoreless two innings, DePaul tacked on the first run in the bottom of the third. With two outs and Erin Andris on third, Haydn Christensen singled to plate Andris home.
The Salukis notched their run in the top of the sixth after Katel Massa hit a RBI double to score a runner from second.
With the score stuck at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, DePaul notched its second run for the 2-1 result. The Blue Demons placed pinch runner Ana Greik on second to start the inning. She advanced to third while Haydn Christensen reached first on a Southern Illinois error. After Haydn Christensen stole second, Morgan Greenwood stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Greik to end the game.
Up next, DePaul heads to Los Angeles for its final tournament of the season. The Blue Demons are scheduled to face Dartmouth, Sacramento State, Oklahoma and Loyola Marymount March 17-19 at the Loyola Marymount Tournament. Following, DePaul heads to San Diego for a midweek game at San Diego on Tuesday, March 21 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
