Softball Defeats Illinois State 5-1

CHICAGO - DePaul softball defeated Illinois State 5-1 on Wednesday evening at Marian Kneer Stadium.
DePaul's (19-16, 4-4 BIG EAST) Morgan Greenwood went 2-for-2 at the plate and added two runs. Megan Leyva also contributed two hits.
Kennedy Garcia earned her eighth win in the circle for the Blue Demons. She struck out one and allowed one earned run on four hits in the 18 batters she faced.
The Blue Demons notched two runs in the top of the second. Jessica Cothern led off with a single and advanced to third off a double from Morgan Greenwood. The two scored right after Brianna Viles singled to right field.
Illinois State got on board in the third inning after Riley Hale hit a solo shot over the left field fence.
Alysia Rodriguez put DePaul up 3-1 with a leadoff homer over center field in the top of the fourth. Greenwood added her second run of the game that very inning after plating home off a RBI single from Haydn Christensen with two outs.
The Blue Demons scored their final run in the sixth. With two outs and Micah Fitzgerald on first and Viles on second, the two stole their next respective bases, Viles being home.
DePaul utilized two other pitchers on its staff throughout the game. Krista Dalgarn replaced Garcia in the circle midway through the fifth inning. She struck out three and allowed three hits out of the nine batters she face.
Missy Zoch replaced Dalgarn in the circle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. She faced one batter.
Up next, DePaul welcomes Providence for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader at noon. The series wraps up on Saturday, April 15 with another noon start.
