Blue Demons Clinch Providence Series with Game Two Victory

CHICAGO - Softball came back from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Providence 9-6 in game two on Friday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium to clinch its second BIG EAST series victory of the season.
Eight different Blue Demons (21-16, 6-4 BIG EAST) were responsible for DePaul's nine runs. Micah Fitzgerald, Jessica Cothern, Morgan Greenwood and Brianna Viles all notched two hits in the game, while Megan Leyva added two RBI.
Krista Dalgarn earned her first win in the circle for DePaul. She pitched one and one third inning after replacing Kennedy Garcia. Dalgarn struck out one batter and allowed one hit in the five batters she faced.
Missy Zoch was credited with her third save of the season. She replaced Dalgarn in the sixth inning, striking out two batters and walking one out of the seven she faced.
Garcia struck out five and allowed five earned runs (one unearned) on eight hits. She faced 22 batters.
Christina Ramirez suffered the loss for Providence (12-21, 3-8 BIG EAST).
The Blue Demons were the first one on the board, scoring a run in the first inning. With two outs and Nicole Pihl on first, Dylan Christensen doubled to center to score Pihl.
DePaul would not score again until after Providence tallied its six runs of the game in the top of the third and fourth innings.
The Friars notched two runs in the third. With two outs, Nicole Lundstrom homered to center. Brittney Veler reached first right after off a DePaul error and scored following a single from Julianne Rurka for the second run.
In the fourth, Providence tallied four runs all off of double hits to go up 6-1. After Rurka doubled with two outs and bases loaded to score all of the runners home, Garcia was replaced by Dalgarn.
The Blue Demons started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth, notching four runs of their own. With one out, Cothern doubled to center and advanced to third off a Greenwood single. Viles followed with a single to score Cothern and advance Greenwood to third. After Kayla Landwehrmier struck out, Greenwood scored off a RBI single from Fitzgerald. Pihl loaded the bases after being walked as Leyva stepped to the plate and notched a single to the Friars shortstop, plating Viles and Fitzgerald home.
Four more runs in the fifth inning solidified the series win for the Blue Demons. With one out and pinch runners Ana Greik and Erin Andris on second and third, Viles struck out, but reached first on an error by the Providence catcher that allowed Greik to score. Haydn Christensen followed with a single to left field, scoring Andris. Viles and Haydn Christensen notched the final two runs of the game off a Providence error.
DePaul and Providence return to Cacciatore Stadium for one final game on Saturday, April 15 to close out the series at noon CT. The Blue Demons' series win marks its second after going 2-1 overall at St. John's last weekend.
