Dominant second quarter and forcing 25 turnovers net Cancun Challenge win
CANCUN – A totally balanced team effort and forcing the game's tempo netted No. 16/16 DePaul a nice 79-59 win Friday over Kansas State at the Cancun Challenge.
Powered by a second quarter in which the Blue Demons (3-1) outscored Kansas State 24-8, coach Doug Bruno's team forged a 25-point lead at halftime and never looked back.
Mart'e Grays came through with 12 points and six rebounds and Dee Bekelja scored 12 points. Ashton Millender added 11 points while Chante Stonewall, Rebekah Dahlman and Tanita Allen scored nine points apiece. Kelly Campbell turned in a complete effort with eight points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
After shooting out to a 45-20 halftime lead, the Blue Demons maintained their 20-plus advantage behind the scoring of Stonewall, Grays, Millender and Sonya Morris. Midway through the third quarter, it was 58-33.
DePaul continued its excellent marksmanship at the free throw line, converting 13 of 13 as they entered the fourth quarter leading 63-41. A Grays corner three-pointer maintained a 22-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
DePaul started out fast, knocking down four of its first six from beyond the arc. A 9-2 run closed out the first quarter with the Blue Demons in front 21-12.
The fast pace was having its effect on Kansas State (3-2) resulting in mistakes as the Wildcats were thrust into an up-tempo game. By halftime, DePaul had forced 18 turnovers. Kansas State finished the game charged with 25 turnovers.
A Grays three-point play, Millender three and back-to-back Bekelja baskets provided a 31-16 lead in the second quarter.
Bekelja was in the midst of the best run of her career. The sophomore guard followed up with consecutive three-pointers, and her 10 points in eight minutes on 4-of-5 shooting sparked the Blue Demons to the significant halftime lead. DePaul closed out the second quarter with an Allen three and a pair of Dahlman free throws.
Bekelja and Allen did their best to alleviate the foul trouble that had Grays and Stonewall on the bench for much of the second quarter. Campbell had already begun filling up the stat sheet with five assists, three rebounds and three steals by intermission.
DePaul will play its final game of the 2018 Cancun Challenge at 12:30 p.m. (CT) Saturday against No. 14/14 Syracuse.
