After getting swept earlier in the day, the Blue Demons retaliated with a sweep of their own over host Central Michigan.
CHIPPEWA, Mich. - Coming back from getting swept by Valparaiso earlier in the day, the Blue Demons (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) retaliated and delivered a sweep of their own, cruising to a victory over host Central Michigan (25-10, 25-22, 25-21).
DePaul led in every category with freshman Mattie Norris topping the night in points with 14.5 and kills with 12. Junior Katie Dolan outshined the opponents, hitting a .500 and leading both teams in assists with 20. Sophomore Isabelle Banez tallied the most digs of the night with 15.
"Great bounce back for the team in beating an outside driven and spirited Central Michigan team," said head coach Marie Zidek. "The team was able to protect their level of play and execute our scout at equal levels.
"I am super proud of the team and staff in the effort to get a solid win."
CMU took the first lead of the match and the next six points would exchange back and forth until DePaul went on a three-point run courtesy of an Emma Price kill, an attack error  and a kill from Avarie Evans-Allen, putting them at a 7-3 advantage. With Central Michigan earning just one more point, a five-run scoring drive featuring two Mattie Norris kills, a thunderous Claire Anderson kill and an attack error would put DePaul up 12-4. With another run up their sleeves, the Blue Demons scored seven straight points on a Mattie Norris kill, a Natalie Hayward service ace and five CMU attack errors to secure a comfortable 20-8 lead. The Chippewas would score just two more points in the match and a CMU attack error would give DePaul the set.
DePaul jumped out to the lead on a Donna Brown kill and the next five points of the set would intertwine until a 3-3 knot. CMU would take as much as a four point lead until DePaul came roaring back to tie it at 11-11. The score would knot four more times until Central Michigan was halted at 22 with a kill from Price and a CMU attack error giving DePaul their second set of the night.
In a do-or-die third set for CMU, neither team would back down easily and the set saw no more than a seven-point difference at any given time. The Chippewas went off and picked up a 10-4 lead early on in the set. With things looking up for CMU, DePaul had other plans. DPU would score 11 of the next 20 points to tie the score at 15-15 and the teams tied it up one last time at 16's before DePaul took it from there. An Anderson kill set off a four-point run for DePaul, featuring kills from Evans-Allen and Isabell De La Rosa and capped off by a CMU attack error, putting the Blue Demons up 19-16. Â CMU got stuck at 21 and alike the other two, the third set was capped with a CMU attack error, handing DePaul the sweep.
The Blue Demons will wrap up the Chippewa Invitational with one final match against La Salle at noon tomorrow.
