Regardless of very narrow battles throughout the first three sets, the Blue Demons could not surpass La Salle in the four-set defeat.
CHIPPEWA, Mich. - Regardless of a neck-and-neck first three sets, DePaul (2-3) was not able to surpass La Salle (2-4) and dropped in four sets, 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 18-25).
La Salle would jump out to a 4-0 lead and despite three different knots in the score, LAS would go up 10-6. DPU would score six of the next eight points, capped off by an Emma Price kill and an Explorer attack error for a 12-12 bind before the lead would go back into the hands of La Salle. DePaul tied the score at 19-19 but could not surpass the Explorers until there were 23's across the board and an Emma Price kill brought DPU to set point to take the first set 25-23.Â
Some Blue Demon momentum found DePaul doubling La Salle's score, 8-4 early in the second set. DPU would lead until a three-point run from LAS would result in a 10-10 bind, one of the five ties that would take place throughout the remainder of the set. After the final knot of 15-15, the Explorers would hold on to the lead and go on to take their first set, 25-23.
Back-to-back kills from Avarie Evans-Allen and Mattie Norris would put the Blue Demons up 2-0 to start off the third set. Alike the previous set, five different binds in the score would make it a narrow battle before La Salle broke away and took the set 25-21.
DePaul struggled offensively in the fourth set, falling behind 19-7 quickly. With a four-point run and the DPU offense picking up towards the end, the Blue Demons were not able to surpass La Salle and dropped 25-18 in the third set. Â
The Blue Demons will host their home-opening DePaul Invitational next weekend which will feature Florida Atlantic, Connecticut and Purdue Fort Wayne. DePaul will face Connecticut on day one, Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 8, DePaul will face Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. and will close off the invitational with a match against Purdue Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m. Play will take place at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
