9/19/2018 2:52:00 PM | WOMEN'S SOCCER
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Sixty NCAA® men's and women's soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates today for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cerny has been a staple of the women's soccer program at DePaul for the past four years. She currently serves as one of two team captains and has evolved during her career from being one of the top players statistically as a freshman, sophomore and junior to taking an ownership of the program during her final season with the Blue Demons.
The Berkeley, Calif. native has won many accolades throughout her time at DePaul, including most recently being named to the All-BIG EAST 2018 Preseason Team. In 2017, she was a United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Second Team Selection and made the All-BIG EAST First Team. She made the 2016 All-BIG EAST Tournament and Second Team as well as being named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team. As a freshman, she was selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in addition to earning the title of BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Cerny is also a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, with a 3.518 GPA.
"Franny is an outstanding young woman on and off the field," head coach Erin Chastain said. "I am very proud of all she has accomplished and all she will continue to achieve."
Each of the 60 candidates has displayed a strong work ethic in the classroom and on the pitch with 34 returning after earning first-team conference honors, 30 having grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, nine being on the MAC Hermann Watch List for 2018 and seven returning All-Americans. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates also have been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.
Each of the two candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
