The Blue Demons will race alongside 30 teams from around the nation
CHICAGO – Two weeks after competing in the 40th National Catholic Invitational, the Blue Demon men's and women's cross country teams are scheduled to hit the course Saturday at the 41st Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Beach in Chicago. Â
Â
The meet, hosted by Loyola Chicago, will see over 30 teams from across the nation, including Arizona, Ohio State, Texas A&M, UIC and Chicago State, compete along Chicago's shore. The Sean Earl University/Collegiate races will kick off with the women's 5k at 11:15 a.m. followed by the men's 8k race at noon.
Â
Looking to lead the women's squad, senior Caroline Kurdej led the Blue Demons at the National Catholic Invitational where she trimmed two minutes off her time from the same competition a year prior. Newcomers Ericka Burgess, Maret Elgren, Mackenzie Mescher, Talia Saleh and Emma Stephens will see action in tomorrow's competition where they hope to continue contributing to the top five scores. Rounding out the women's squad will be returners Margaret Hastings and Kate Jacobs.
Â
Sophomore Charlie McIntyre and senior Jeremy Lozano, who crossed the line within 0.12 seconds of each other in South Bend, Ind., hope to bring the same level of competition to the familiar course. After not competing last season, Lozano is hoping to finish the regular season strong as the teams prepare for the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 27 in Carmel, Ind. Top-performers Noah Deck, Henry Harper and Matthew Gagen will also run for the men's squad who will be rounded out by Conor Fagan, Shane Knanishu, Jack Korte, Anthony Perry and Ryan Taylor.
Â
Admission to the event is free of charge. Due to the large number of participating teams and limited parking, fans are encouraged to utilize public transportation. Dedicated drop off locations will be marked for ride sharing services. Montrose Beach can be accessed via the Wilson red line CTA stop and via the #36 and #151 CTA buses.
