Regardless of a hungry offense, DePaul fell to Florida Atlantic in three sets to open up day two of the DePaul Invitational.
CHICAGO – Persistency and determination are two words to describe DePaul's performance in this morning's contest against Florida Atlantic. The 10:00 a.m. match kicked off day two of the DePaul Invitational and regardless of a stellar presentation from the Blue Demons, FAU took the match in three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-19).
"That was a very defensive FAU team," said head coach Marie Zidek, "the best we have faced all year.
"Congratulations to them and their performance. We had plenty of opportunities to compete hard against the lr defense and some players were given the chance to turn the corner with our offense.
"With each match, we find ways to get better and we will continue that versus Purdue Fort Wayne this evening."
The Owls jumped out to the lead on a kill and went ahead 3-0 before a kill from Emma Price and an FAU attack error put the Blue Demons on the board. DePaul would fall behind by a difference of four points before two FAU attack errors and two consecutive Claire Anderson service aces knotted the score at 8-8. Riding on momentum, kills from Natalie Hayward and Isabell De La Rosa would put DePaul up 10-9. With both sides exchanging points for the remainder of the set, the score would bind nine more times before Florida Atlantic was able to break away and take the set 25-19.
DePaul struggled offensively in the second set and fell behind by up to six points early on. Regardless of some big plays from the Blue Demons, FAU rose above and took their second set by a difference of 25-17.
The final stanza started off in favor of the Blue Demons, with DPU immediately bursting out to a 6-2 lead courtesy of some thunderous kills from Torti, Emma Price and De La Rosa along with a group of Owls errors. After an 8-8 knot in the score, FAU found their way to a victory, capping off the match with a 25-19 victory.
DePaul will play in the final match of the DePaul Invitational tonight at 7:00 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
