
DePaul Comes Up Short at Villanova

Blue Demons drop 73-68 decision in first road conference game
VILLANOVA, Pa. - DePaul led by as many as 14 points, but Villanova chipped away and held off DePaul's final attempt to send the game to overtime in a 73-68 decision at Finneran Pavilion. Eli Cain and Max Strus scored 16 points apiece to lead the Blue Demons.
DePaul opened up with a 13-5 lead behind Cain and Paul Reed and built its advantage to as many as 14 points midway through the first half. Villanova slowly climbed back into the game and closed to within two with 2:55 left before Femi Olujobi scored on back-to-back possessions for the Blue Demons and DePaul took a 38-34 lead into halftime.
The Blue Demons scored the first seven points of the second half with a three by Strus followed by a dunk and a jumper by Reed to push the advantage back to double figures at 45-34.
DePaul (8-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) held at least a five-point advantage until the midway point of the second half when a three-pointer by Eric Paschall pulled the Wildcats to within two points at 53-51.
A three by Strus was answered with nine straight points from Villanova (10-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) and the Wildcats held a 60-56 lead with seven minutes left in the game. The lead grew as high as six points for Villanova before DePaul made a final run with a three-point attempt by Strus to tie the game missed with eight seconds on the clock.
Strus added eight rebounds to his 16 points while Devin Gage finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Cain added four boards and three assists and Olujobi totaled 12 points and four rebounds.
Paschall led all scorers with 24 points while Phil Booth and Saddiq Bey scored 15 points each.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Sunday afternoon to face Seton Hall. Start time is Noon on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
