Clutch plays by Blue Demon pair result in 73-71 BIG EAST road win
CINCINNATI – Kelly Campbell and Mart'e Grays came up huge when it counted the most for DePaul on Sunday.
In front of a national TV audience on FS2, Campbell made some clutch steals and baskets and Grays was a force down low in the Blue Demons 73-71 BIG EAST overtime victory over Xavier. Coach Doug Bruno's team improved to 15-6 and 6-3 in the rugged BIG EAST.
Campbell made two of the biggest steals of the season---one in regulation and one in overtime---to help ensure the gritty road win. The junior guard finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Grays had a game-high 22 points and added 10 rebounds. Chante Stonewall had her second splendid performance in a row with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Ashton Millender added 10 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Grays opened the overtime with a tough score down low and Campbell continued her late-game heroics with a three-pointer beyond NBA range as the shot clock ran down.
The Blue Demons led 71-66 when Xavier closed to 71-69 on Na'Teshia Owens' three-point play. Maya Stovall's foul shot made it 72-69 with 1:56 left.
Princess Stewart hit a bank shot and it was 72-71. Campbell came to the rescue again stealing the ball with just nine seconds showing on the clock. Rebekah Dahlman hit a foul shot with 4.5 seconds left.
Millender began the fourth quarter on the bench with four fouls as DePaul led by two. Xavier scored four in a row with Princess Stewart's layup giving the Musketeers a 57-55 lead with 5:57 left in the game. It was their first lead of the game
Stonewall's three-pointer temporarily restored a DePaul lead until the Musketeers answered to go ahead 59-58 with 4:54 to go. Millender was whistled for her fifth foul.
Talk about nail-biters, the Blue Demons were down 65-61 when Campbell scored on a layup with 1:26 left. Campbell made a steal on Xavier's next possession and scored with :39 to go sending the game into overtime tied at 65-65.
The Blue Demons' eight point halftime margin was sliced to two by the third quarter media timeout. Owens ignited a Xavier rally that had the home team outscoring DePaul 13-7 by the middle of the quarter.
It remained close the rest of the period with the visiting team either leading by two or tied. A Grays foul shot followed by a Campbell cut-to-score layup made it 51-48. The Musketeers responded with a three-ball in the corner. Grays scored in the paint for a 53-51 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
DePaul shot out to a quick 9-2 lead after the opening tip sparked by a pair of Maya Stovall steals and one each from Millender and Stonewall along with five points from Grays. Those four steals came in less than three minutes.
Stonewall continued her hot shooting from Friday night, making four of her first five including three in a row. Her eight points combined with seven from fellow forward Grays led their team to a 21-13 lead after one quarter.
DePaul had six steals in the first 10 minutes but converted just one of its first nine from beyond the arc.
Millender hit a three early in the second quarter and the Blue Demons had their first double-digit lead at 26-16. Xavier went on a 9-0 run to draw within one at the media timeout.
Once again, Millender connected from deep to snap the Friar scoring streak. Baskets by Lexi Held and Stovall along with a Campbell three-pointer maintained a seven-point advantage. Rebekah Dahlman's three gave DePaul a 39-31 lead at halftime.
Grays (nine points), Stonewall and Millender (eight each) appeared headed to double-digit efforts. Their team had nine steals by intermission but had made five of 18 from behind the arc.
The Blue Demons have a week to prepare for the highly anticipated rematch with No. 10/9 Marquette on Super Bowl Sunday. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
